Why is it important to measure blood glucose under home conditions?

Several factors can influence blood glucose results in pet patients.
Cats are easily stressed by transportation to the veterinarian, examinations and other unusual actions. Stress-induced hyperglycemia may cause serum glucose elevations and results in falsely elevated blood glucose level tests. Therefore, diagnosis of diabetes can not be simply based on one single blood glucose measurement.

Elevation of blood glucose levels in dogs could be influenced by diverse concurrent problems for example by other hormonal diseases, in chronical pancreatitis or by long term glucocorticoid administration.
When blood sugar levels of your pet are measured under relaxed and familiar conditions at home, the results are much more reliable causing less stress for the pet as well as for the owner.

Periodic reevaluation is necessary to ensure that the disease is under control. Based on these reevaluations, you may have to change your pet‘s treatment regimen over time. Results of the WellionVet GLUCO CALEA meter are accurate for veterinarian purposes.

It is important to motivate the animals by means of positive reinforcement like:

  • Perform the blood glucose testing under calm and relaxed conditions
  • Feed a “Goodie” as a reward
  • Use a lancing device that only gives a silent “click”
